Broly (Buror) is the misguided main antagonist of Dragon Ball Super: Broly and the son of Paragus. He is the most recent of the Legendary Super Saiyans, a demonic Saiyan warrior who only appears once every thousand years. He was trapped on the planet Vampa by King Vegeta due to his extreme strength, where he was raised by his father before the Frieza Force rescued him years later.
Overview
Creation and Concept
Broly is based on the previous Broly from the Broly film trilogy from Dragon Ball Z.
Broly’s inclusion in the film was suggested to Akira Toriyama by his editor due to his enormous popularity. After seeing the previous Broly films, Toriyama decided that if he changed a few things about him, Broly could be very interesting.
Toriyama’s effort to integrate Broly into the “Dragon Ball canon” is reflected by this incarnation of Broly. Toriyama also changed his character’s actions from one of vengeance to one of confusion and kindness.
Although Toriyama designed the majority of the character, he chose to disregard the Legendary Super Saiyan form, prompting Naohiro Shintani to design his own version of the form to implement it.
Appearance
Broly has shiny brown skin, black eyes, shoulder-length black hair and earrings. Broly’s head has a crown and a blue jewel on his forehead, worn by Paragus himself – his father to curb his anger that turns him into a Legendary Super Saiyan. In the biceps, wrists, back belt as well as the legs, it looks like jewelry (but can all have the function of controlling strength). Broly in white pants wearing a red scarf is quite similar to Kibito
Personality
While still in his normal state, Broly looks very docile and is not in danger. However, from the new aura, his power reached 10,000 and he felt extremely angry when he saw … Goku crying too loudly in the side cage. Broly got bigger as he got older and Broly’s anger seemed to be more abundant and it seemed something inside Broly’s body always made him uncomfortable. His father, Paragus, created a necklace that controlled his powers, softened his anger and returned to his meek state.
Broly yearns to fight strong opponents (like Goku). When transforming into the legendary Super Saiyan, he becomes wicked (Piccolo calls him a monster). He frantically fights but does not completely lose his sense of control, Broly is still aware of what he does but he cannot control his anger.
Broly hates Goku for the very simple reason that when he was born, Goku cried so loudly that he was angry. This formed in his mind from a young age and was so deeply ingrained in his growing up that he always wanted to find Goku for “revenge”.
Background
Broly was born in the year 737, in the midst of a turbulent period between the Saiyans and the Frieza army. An energy level of 10,000 at birth was on par with BÄdakku and King Vegeta, which also aroused King Vegeta’s doubts, directly affecting his future fate.
The father and son were killed by King Vegeta
Because Broly’s power is too great, King Vegeta thinks that his future will be a danger to the Saiyan clan, so he ordered to kill him. Paragus tried to beg, but King Vegeta did not forgive, even killed him. Broly also suffered the same fate when the assassin came to the incubator and stabbed in the chest, both of which were then thrown out.
The fate of the father and son is not over yet, the above fatal blows are not enough to kill them. When Planet Vegeta was destroyed by Frieza, Broly used his powers to protect his father and vowed to take revenge on the Vegeta royal family.
Paragus controls Broly
After being able to use the ring to control Broly, Paragus planned to annex a few planets in the universe (including the earth). He also used him to destroy many planets in the south of the galaxy to cause turmoil in the universe. Realizing this, King kai informs Goku about the arrival of a mad Super Saiyan
Movie: The Legendary Super Saiyan
Broly is in a normal state where he seems to forget everything he did when he became the legendary Super Saiyan. So he goes along with Vegeta to the planet Todokama to find the Legendary Super Saiyan that is harming the universe. When he meets Goku, at Paragus Palace, he becomes angry but Paragus takes control. But when night comes, Broly falls out of control and attacks Goku in his Super Saiyan state. Fortunately, Paragus has arrived and managed to control the situation, but Goku seems to realize this is the crazy Saiyan he was looking for. When Goku and Vegeta are about to leave, Broly approaches and frantically breaks the seal of power, not even Paragus can control it. His strength is constantly increasing, causing Vegeta to be extremely shocked, and despite fighting together, goku, gohan and Future trunks cannot stop Broly.
Movie: Second Coming
In the above episode, Broly seems to have been killed by Goku, but he returned in this episode. He escaped death and sat in a small spacecraft (Space Pod) to Earth in a state of exhaustion. Finally Broly is awakened in a thick ice lake by Goten’s call
Broly continues to get mad when he meets Goten because the boy is exactly like a goku. Gohan then appears amazed that he is still alive but eventually the group teamed up with a powerful kamehameha that sends Broly into the sun. This is probably a sad ending for the legendary Saiyan with destiny. Born as a huge potential, but he was killed by King Saiyan, had no chance to contribute to Planet Vegeta and was a threat to Goku and his group.
Movie: Bio-Broly
After the Z warriors left Natade village, Maloja obtained Broly’s blood sample from the Jaguar lord. He then transferred to Dr. Collie and the scientists working on the creation of his mutant, Bio-Broly.

Power
Brolly’s strength increases as he gets older, but it also has his limits. In Movie 8 when Broly transforms into Legendary Super Saiyan, he states that “My powers have reached the limit”. It shows that Broly’s power will continue to increase as he transforms, but at some point it stops. While in his Super Saiyan state, he easily defeated all 5 people, Goku, Gohan, Future Trunks, Vegeta and Piccolo. Broly is seemingly ineffective with kicks, but everyone’s combo kame is superior to him.
He is also able to stand and survive fatal blows such as the killer stab (king vegeta) and Goku’s punch in The Legendary Super Saiyan.
Trivia
- Broly’s name is a pun on the vegetable broccoli, much like his Z movie counterpart.
- In the film, this version of Broly is about Vegeta’s age[19], making him slightly older than his original counterpart, who was Goku’s age. Broly as an adult still lacks a tail, despite the fact that his original counterpart was said to have kept his.
- Broly is also one of only three full-blooded Saiyans who has never died in the series. Onio and Tarble are the other two.
- Broly’s Super Saiyan (Full Power) form is given lines in Xenoverse 2, despite only shouting, roaring, and grunting during his battle with Gogeta in the first film.
- Broly wears Ba’s ear around his waist as a makeshift sash, as he did in the original Dragon Ball Z incarnation’s red sash
- Broly and Gogeta’s battle could be an homage to the intro of Dragon Ball Z: Budokai 3, where his Z counterpart is seen fighting Gogeta.
- Interestingly, Gogeta used the Super Kamehameha as his last move against both versions.
- In many ways, Broly and Goku are ironically similar
- Both are strong, gentle-hearted Saiyans who value friendship.
- Both grew up in the wilderness and were mentored by a father figure they adore.
- After a loved one was killed by Frieza, they both became Super Saiyans.
- While Broly from Dragon Ball Super and Broly from the Broly Saga are two distinct characters with opposing personalities, the latter’s depiction in one of the what-if storylines for Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors portrayed an amnesiac Broly with a personality identical to Broly from Dragon Ball Super (which occurred several years after that game’s release), which might have implied that this would have been Broly’s initial personality had he not suffered from the extreme trauma that occurred during his birth.
